Two different products answer this search

Buyers looking for an electric motor for an inflatable raft usually mean one of two things, and the factory programmes treat them as separate classes. One is a transom-mounted outboard, which is what the raft hulls are rated for and which is quoted in horsepower. The other is a compact electric drive — the reviewed batch covers 500 W, 700 W and 1000 W units built for board assist, ride-on platforms and diver propulsion, quoted in watts and battery capacity.

The two are not substitutes and the arithmetic shows why. A 1000 W drive is roughly 1.3 hp. The smallest hull in the dinghy programme, at 210 cm, is rated 2.5 hp; a 270 cm hull is rated 10 hp. An electric drive of that class moves a board or assists a swimmer — it does not push a loaded raft against wind and current, and a listing that implies otherwise is describing a different use than the one you have in mind.

What the transom will actually accept

If the intention is a transom-mount electric outboard, the constraint is the same as for a petrol one and the catalogue is explicit about it. A wooden transom bonded into a 270 cm hull is rated 10 hp; 320 cm reaches 15 hp; the largest soft-floor hulls reach 30 hp. Those figures describe what the structure carries, and an electric motor at equivalent thrust is usually heavier than the petrol unit it replaces because the battery travels with it.

Ask for the transom height in centimetres so shaft length can be matched, the transom material, and the maximum stern weight rather than only the maximum horsepower. On a light hull the weight figure, not the power figure, is the one that runs out first.

Thrust and horsepower cannot be compared on one number

Electric drives are specified as watts or as pounds of thrust at a stated current draw; petrol outboards are specified in horsepower at the shaft. Neither converts cleanly to the other, because the electric figure holds only while the battery holds voltage. A drive quoted at a peak rating and a drive quoted at a continuous rating can carry the same headline number and behave completely differently after twenty minutes.

When comparing quotes, ask for the runtime at a stated load rather than the peak wattage, and ask whether the battery is included, what its capacity is, and whether it is the supplier's pack or a generic one. Those three answers decide both the real-world performance and the shipping category.

Batteries change the freight problem

A lithium pack turns an ordinary parcel into restricted cargo. Watt-hour rating, packaging, documentation and carrier acceptance all follow from it, and the rules differ by destination and by whether the battery ships inside the unit or separately. Settle this before comparing landed cost, because it can be a larger line than the difference between two suppliers.

For fleet or dealer orders, ask explicitly whether the quoted price assumes batteries included, and how many units per carton the freight assumption is based on. A drive package quoted without its battery is not the same product as one quoted with it, and the gap is rarely visible in the headline price.
